We all have been taught to trust others and be liked by all. However, in the age of technology, social media and political correctness there is a lot of pressure to conform or follow what society 'says' you should believe or do. Self-reliance can also be seen as getting things done for yourself without relying on others (but this does not mean avoiding or seeking help and advice from others). By striving and learning to be self-reliant you grow and become an independent mature individual.
We start early in learning to be independent. As a child we tie our shoes, dress ourselves, feed ourselves without the aid of others. As we mature and reach the teens and twenties, we learn to meet obligations, complete projects and assignments in school, recognize and meet obligations as being a part of a family and make decisions. As an adult, we understand relying first on ourselves and supporting our families and helping others is what we are called to do - independent of what TV, society and others want us to do - to be our own person!
The four step model is simple to develop self-reliance and independent skills:
- Assume responsibility for yourself, your life and your actions.
.. recognize decisions YOU make - are YOURS not someone else's who advised you
.. - Be informed and develop your personal skills stack
.. develop skills and basic understanding in many disciplines
.. take risks allowing yourslef to fail 'small' but learn from those mistakes - Identify your goals and know where you are going.
.. know who you and understand your life roles (son, daughter, student, friend, Christian)
.. within those roles identify what you want to achieve long term and have a plan
.. revisit, modify and adjust the roles and goals - Make your own decisions.
.. understand the impacts of your decision - gains, loss, cost and affects to others
